After completing his education, Walton began his career as a teacher, working at several prestigious institutions, including Harvard University and the University of Chicago. He also served as the headmaster of the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire for several years. In addition to his work as an educator, Walton was a prolific author, writing numerous books on American history and politics. His most famous work, "The Story of the American People," was a comprehensive history of the United States that was widely used as a textbook in schools and universities. Walton was also a prominent member of several historical and educational organizations, including the American Historical Association and the National Education Association.
